Telluride Photo Blog

Hello,

We took a million pictures on this trip, so I wanted to add some of them to show you all. Also, we did not make it to the second round of the contest, but it was still a lot of fun.

First of all, we need to introduce to you "The Professor"! He is our trusty mini-van taking us on all of our adventures.

This is the awesome sign that greets you in Gila Bend, AZ.

These were really cool sculptures in Gila Bend.

Here is another view of the beauty in Telluride.

This is us playing in the competition.

I had to fly home today because I am going to the Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz. This is the aerial view of Colorado.

Even though Telluride was wonderful, there is nothing like coming home. I always forget how beautiful it is to fly into San Diego, but this is what it looks like from the right side of the plane.

I hope you enjoyed these photos. Stay tuned for our next leg of the tour!

Joseph.

6/20/08, Day 4 of Telluride

6:32AM - Just woke up having dreamt that I woke up at 10:30 this morning, at my HOUSE. I was frantic, and was going to try and make it to the competition anyway, but I just went back to sleep. (This is all in my dream.) Then I woke up again at 9:00PM and wasn't sure if I had only been dreaming (in my dream). I called Joe and he picked up and said, "Yeah, it was fun, we liked it... EXCEPT FOR THE 50 POINTS WE LOST WITHOUT YOU!" and promptly hung up. Then I woke up for real just now and felt like I hadn't slept at all. Oh nerves...

6/19/08, Day 3 of Telluride

10:30AM - As I was plotting the course on Mack's trusty road atlas, I noticed an interesting attraction called 'Dinosaur Tracks'. We figured that it would be what it sounded like, and decided to check it out. After taking the wrong fork in the road, backtracking and finding the real way, we finally saw a giant arrow pointing perpendicularly to the road that signified 'Dinosaur Tracks'. As we pulled off onto the dirt and gravel road, we were unsure what we were getting ourselves into. The only thing we could see was a group of 5 or 6 people sitting under a tent. As we exited the air-conditioned van for the 100+ degree heat, Mack said, "Alright. Let's not get scammed or robbed." Or murdered, I thought to myself... We were led through the tracks by a drunk Navajo guide, who mumbled as he led us farther and farther away from our car. I feared that they walked unsuspecting people far out into the desert and then who knows what would happen. I felt bad for thinking these things, but you would too as the parking lot looked like something from a horror movie. But it turned out to be fairly legit, and the tracks were really cool. I was a little suspicious at first that they tracks were fake, but the guide kept pointing out spots where paleontologists took out fossils in the 40s, which appeared real. The tour ended, so we gave our new friend $15 and hopped back in the car, on the way to Four Corners.

12:12PM - We checked out of our Cortez Super 8 this morning right at 11. After loading up the car (our instruments sleep in the hotels with us) we went down the street to this restaurant called 'Once Upon a Sandwich'. It was pretty good, I loved the decor. Very summer campy, with brightly colored plastic cups and red + white checkered cloth napkins.
They also had a vegetarian section to the menu, so Mack and I were happy campers (haha.) After lunch, we got gas ($3.96!) and ice for the cooler. Now we're on the way to Telluride! It's a short drive, I am so excited. Colorado is gorgeous. I was actually born here, in Fort Collins, close to Boulder. We moved to San Diego when I was 3, but I have fuzzy memories of everything looking pretty like this. I also remember building my first snowman, and a boy with a plastic chair sitting on it. If we have time, I'll seek him out and get my revenge...wearing a yellow jumpsuit...with Hatori Hanzo steel... We're just driving and listening to Thriller now. Talk soon.
-Black Mamba (Kelsea)

11:53PM - We are in Telluride! I'll let the pictures speak for themselves, there is now way to describe this place. It's quite honestly like a movie set, or Mainstreet USA at Disneyland. There are scenic patches of snow and yet the temperature reached 85 degrees today! Let's see... there are a lot of things being let out but I suppose you don't want to know every detail. Such as, we spent 3 hours in Flagstaff watching a VH1 marathon of 'Best Songs of the 80s'. Top 100 countdown. I think we forgot to mention how cool Four Corners was. The monument itself is very majestic and official, but the rickety wooden sales booths were not so much so. We bought 3 t-shirts anyway. We're such tourists. Mine is the coolest. It has a huge dinosaur on it and glows in the dark. They only had kid sizes, so it's a tad bit small, but it was the clear choice. We had a nice short drive today, and what a beautiful drive it was! I saw a deer and a robin for the first time in my life. Every 500 feet, the scenery would change and we'd all say "Oh man..." or "Oh wow..." or "Whaaaaaat?" in unison. The sights of the Colorado mountains are breathtaking. We drove down into town, only to find that our condo was outside of Telluride itself. We drove back and located it, and had to wait for someone to let us in. While we waited, Mack's Aunt Gail and cousin Aly found us and we later went to dinner with them at a delicious organic mexican restaurant. Everything is orgainic here. I am in heaven. Before that, we settled into the condo Joe's mom had booked. Again, only pictures will do it justice. It has 3 stories, is amazing and is within walking distance of the gondola sky-ride, which is the way to get into town. Telluride is so magical, you have to fly in. So far, on the gondola rides, we met a cool Australian guy who now lives here. He told us there are no commercial franchises except for a family owned Ace Hardware. How cool is that?? He seemed proud of his town. We also met a husband, wife and nephew unit, who came for the festival. They asked us about our music and seemed very enthused and promised to come see us compete tomorrow. I should go to sleep, we are getting into town at 9:00AM tomorrow and we still don't know what the order is. We practiced on the porch today, the mountains and pines in the background and I felt confident. We've been saying that we'll either come in first of last. First if they want something new and original, or last if they want a fast pickin' bluegrass band. All of the other bands fit in the latter. Who knows! We'll obviously give updates about the outcome. If we make it tomorrow, it's onto round 2, final round! That would be Saturday. Fingers crossed!

6/18/08, Day 2 of Telluride

11:14AM - Right now we're driving on Arizona State Hwy 89. We checked out of our super Super 8 hotel around 10:30. We planned on getting up early to go to Slide Rock before check out, but when 6:15 rolled around, we were almost too tired to even protest, so we chose to catch up on some sleep. Can't forget, we've got a huge competition to be healthy and ready for! The drive right now is amazing. Mack was saying that road trips always restore his faith that humans haven't covered every square inch of the Earth with buildings, and I quite agree. Right now I see yellow grass plains that stretch for miles. It could be Africa. I always yearn to get out and see and feel and smell everything up close. And yet, I love to be on the inside watching. What would it take, to drop everything and let myself into the wild? To walk upon these gorgeous plains with nothing but my senses for company... not sure what there would be to find, but the scenery would be enough! It's times like these I especially wish I had a biplane. We're headed to Cortez, CO. On the way, we're stopping at an attraction listed on the map called 'Dinosaur Tracks'. We'll let you know how that is...

2:02PM - Navajo Nation

We stopped at a general store and as we pulled up, there were 4 bikes (I should clarify, bicycles, parked out front. I asked the guys and they said they were headed to L.A. from Boston! How boss is that? They have been at it for a month. That is just about the coolest thing I have ever heard. Right now we are headed for Kayenta. Hopefully there will be some food. After that it's onto Four Corners. 4 states at once!

6/17/08, Day 1 of Telluride

6/17/08, Reporting from Super 8 Motel in Flagstaff, AZ. Typed straight from our band tour journal:

9:35AM - We woke up at 7 and are now on our way, after a groggy couple of hours.

My parents stocked us up with goodies galore and I stocked myself with a fruit smoothie. Mmm... good to go! Mack just put $80 dollars in the tank. Gas is crazy. We couldn't have afforded the trip without all the wonderful support of our friends and beneficiaries. Thank you! We perform in Telluride in 3 days. I am so nervous! As much as I know that winning isn't everything, I really hope to win. It would be amazing, standing on stage, in the beautiful Colorado mountains as everyone cheers us on... We just got on the 8 East, and as Mack exclaimed, 'So it begins!!!' I'll make Joseph write later.
Much love,
Kelsea Rae Little, road-tripper extraordinaire

11:50AM - Yuma, AZ

111 degrees Faren-fucking-heit
Gas is $4.06
- Mack, overheated, long hair

12:16PM - Yuma, AZ, 112 degrees
We stopped at a Chevron/Jack in the Box, parallel to which was a gorgeous flower field. It smelled like lavender but I'm not sure. I honestly couldn't help but indulge in a good old-fashioned frolic. The wind moved the tops like a purple ocean and it was so delicate and beautiful. I tried to get the boys to come in, to no avail. Waist deep in the center, I sat down and found myself eye-to-eye with a perfectly red ladybug. What an amazing home it has! Never thought I'd say that about Arizona. It is kind of cool, with all the rocks about. I feel like I'm in the 19th century, drilling oil. (I drink your milkshake! [Hi Ben.])

I get to drive once we hit Phoenix, gotta rest up!
Cooling in the car,
KRL

Joe only has one Bob Marley song on his iPod. Forshame.
- Man Bun (Mack)

6:47PM
We (I) drove all the way through Sedona, behind an extremely slow fire truck to find that Slide Rock actually closes at 6, not 8. We weren't too disappointed. How could we be? Sedona is the land of red rocks and mountains and it was beyond majestic. I cannot describe how hugely breathtaking the formations are. Right now we are driving through the heavily forested mountains, with the light fading and we are listening to 'Spectacular Views'. Jenny Lewis says it all. It's so fucking beautiful! Everything is.
At peace,
Kels

And now a haiku.

We, The Wrong Trousers
survived the first day on tour.
The adventure starts.
